or
Las Cataratas del Iguazu in Spanish or As cataratas
do Iguaçu in Portuguese.

Located
next to the city of Foz do Iguaçu
on the border to Argentina and Paraguay,
is one
of the
major sights
of Latin
America.
A
short look at the map of Brazil tells you, however,
that the
falls more than just a day excursion to be included in
a short trip to Brazil - Rio de Janeiro is 800 miles
(1260km) away!
An additional obstacle is the lack of flights and/or bad connections
to Iguassu. Foz do Iguaçu has only about 100.000 inhabitants,
yet three airports serve the area: one in Brazil, one in Argentina,
and one in Paraguay.
To
make travel easy however, only the Brazilian airport comes
into question, when traveling from Brazil.
The
Iguassu Falls are a highly recommendable stops on trips
to southwest
Brazil only or in trips that also include Buenos Aires,
where these falls then make an excellent stop halfway
between Buenos
Aires and Rio. This route also includes the Serra do
Mar mountains and the Atlantic port city of Antonina
- including the scenic railroad over the Serra do Mar
mountain range!
Visiting
just Rio de Janeiro and the Iguassu Falls, which many
tour companies offer, one
is forced to spend much time in airports, instead of
enjoying the natural beauty of this corner of Brazil.
