When
referring to the highlands of Brazil, most people are
referring
to the Chapada Diaman-tina in the state
of Bahia.
For
tourists, there are four areas in Brazil that are not on the
coast and that have a good infrastructure to receive travelers:
The best known is the Amazon rainforest; the most traveled
to: the Baroque Gold minining area shared by Rio state and
Minas Gerais; the wetlands of the Panatanal; and the Diamond
Highlands (or Chapada Diamantina in Portuguese.)
Why
is that? The Chapada Diamantina offers much the same
pleasant
climate all year round, the landscape is overwhelming,
caves, riverbanks, waterfalls, great opportunities walking
and
hiking
for all levels, and it is close to the second most attractive
Brazilian city: Salvador da Bahia.
Lençois,
the center of the area, is a charming, quiet colonial town
- an excellent spot to relax after the day's hiking, it central
sqare alway ready to accommodate you in the evening for a
cool beer.
